Family wine estate · since 1962

Wine from the windy ridge above Vasa.

A family estate in the Limassol wine villages. Fourteen hectares of Cypriot grapes, 900 to 1,040 metres up, made into wine in our own cellar.

The estate

Three generations on one hillside.

Loizos Iacovou planted his first Mavro and Xynisteri on the ridge in 1962, as low bush vines, the way everyone in Vasa did.

The wind that gave the place its name keeps the vines dry and the nights cool, even in August. His grandchildren, Andri and Christos, farm the same terraces by hand today. We built the cellar in 2003 and have bottled everything we grow ever since.

Soil & grapes

Chalk, altitude and five Cypriot grapes.

Our soils are white and chalky, poor in everything except drainage. Days are hot, summer nights drop to 15°C, and the grapes ripen slowly. We only grow varieties that have been on the island for centuries.

  1. Xynisteri

    white · 6.2 ha

The island’s white grape. Citrus, salt, a little almond. Most of what we grow.

  2. Promara

    white · 0.8 ha

Nearly gone twenty years ago. Peach, fennel and more body than Xynisteri.

  3. Mavro

    red · 3.1 ha

The old workhorse of the villages. On sixty-year-old bush vines it gives light, spicy reds.

  4. Maratheftiko

    red · 2.6 ha

Deep colour, wild cherry, firm tannin. It can’t pollinate itself, so it grows beside Mavro.

  5. Yiannoudi

    red · 1.3 ha

Rediscovered in a few old village vineyards in the 2000s. Black fruit, herbs, a long finish.

The wines

Eight wines, all from the ridge.

Cellar door prices. We deliver anywhere in Cyprus, free on orders over €90. Wine is sold to over-18s only.

The year

A year on the ridge.

Bush vines pruned for winter in Lofou, a Limassol wine village, in January

01 January – February

Pruning

We prune every bush vine by hand, two buds to a spur. It takes the four of us about six weeks.

New spring shoots on a row of young vines

02 April – May

Budburst

Late, because of the altitude: around mid-April, a few weeks after the vineyards near the coast. Frost is the worry now.

Bunches of red grapes half way through changing colour

03 July

Veraison

The red grapes change colour. We thin the bunches but leave the leaves on: the sun at 1,000 metres is strong.

A crate of white grapes just picked, seen from above

04 Late August – early October

Harvest

Picked at dawn into 15 kg crates, Xynisteri first and Yiannoudi last. Every crate is in the cellar within the hour.

Two rows of oak barrels under a vaulted stone ceiling

05 October – December

In the cellar

Slow, cool fermentations, then the reds go into barrel. In December we taste every tank and decide the blends.

The cellar

Small, cool, and by gravity where we can.

  1. 01

    Sorting

Every crate goes over the sorting table. Anything we wouldn’t eat ourselves stays out.

  2. 02

    Pressing & fermenting

Whites are pressed as whole bunches and fermented in steel at 14–16°C. Reds ferment in small open vats and are punched down by hand.

  3. 03

    Ageing

French oak, 225 and 500 litres, mostly on their third or fourth use. We want the wine to taste of the ridge, not of the barrel.

  4. 04

    Bottling

On the estate, lightly filtered, with no added sugar and low sulphur.

Tastings & visits

Come up and taste.

Every tasting is hosted by Andri or Christos, in English or Greek. Please book at least a day ahead: we’re a small team and often out in the vineyard.
